anyone who started in SMB/commercial want to provide insight on the role? Would you recommend it as a first AE role despite low quota attainment data?

I think this comes down to how bad you want it - the reps that do well med > over quota take a lot of pride in their work. If you're someone who puts in the work you're selling literally the best system performance & observability platform.

It's a crowded space - so if you come in with high automation & no tailored messaging this is not the role for you.

I worked as a Commercial AE at Datadog after being an AE for a couple of years before. I wish the role at Datadog was my first AE role as it teaches you how to be your best self. It gives you a structure and the right methodology to be successful in sales. I always recommend people that ask me about an AE role at Datadog to go for it as it will really make you great at selling and you will learn skills that will make you earn a lot of money in your career.

I was an sdr who was promoted to AE at Datadog. Common theme was that the reps who were promoted internally outperformed the external hires. Few reasons for this: 1. Much of the role is generating your own pipeline. Former DD SDRs obvisouly have an advantage
2. The product is very technical and for an external hire who has never sold any devops tools it can take 6 months to get grasp of the product

Do not work here. It is literally the worst sales environment. Terrible management top to bottom. Not enough leads. All outbound cold prospecting. 5% hit quota

Yes highly recommend - even if you give it your best shot and don't find your groove over a year or two, people love to hire datadog reps. If you can snag a promotion there, you will have at least one recruiter in your inbox every day. One day, I counted 6 recruiter messages. Beyond that, you will also learn some great sales skills as the other answers mention

Definitely a great sales and tech school! If youre fine with earning a bit less and learn really great frameworks, this is the place to be. And youll get overwhelmed with great recruiter messages! So definitely a good place to start your sales career!
