Question

I'm interested in MongoDB for an Enterprise AE role on the acquisitions team, but I've heard it's completely hit or miss based on the accounts you have in your patch and whether you get lucky break with consumption. Is this accurate or are Enterprise reps generally seeing success?

90% of reps who move into Enterprise acquisition are pushed out within a year or less. You’re unlikely to earn commissions for at least the first year, and your day-to-day responsibilities will resemble those of an SDR. I strongly recommend doing your due diligence before pursuing the role. Reach out to people currently in the position, as well as those who have recently left, to get an accurate picture of what you’re up against.

Enterprise AE on the Growth team is pretty hit or miss based on accounts. Enterprise AE on the acquisitions team is where your career will go to die. Expect not "closing" a deal based off of the consumption model gates they set for 12-18 months making only your base and making 200 cold calls a week minimum. Extremely high rep turnover, extreme micromanagement,  and horrible culture.

Stay far away from the Enterprise Acquisition team.

Going to echo what the others have said. Enterprise Acquisitions is just terrible. Most accounts you get are ones that other reps have also tried to sell into. If this is your first time at MongoDB, or first time getting into "Enteprise" and you want to go in for the training and "brand" on your resume, then it's something to consider.

However, the amount of PG you do (PG is always something you do. But the scale you do it in Acquisition is just nuts) is more than an ADR/SDR would. When Mongo switched to consumption model in 2023, it went downhill as most customers will utilize Mongo but for a small deployment, so you can't expect it to grow a lot. They changed the quota a bit in 2024, but still unattainable. Highly likely you'll be at base for the first 12-15 mo.

It's not as attractive to work at MongoDB anymore since the change in the model, and all the good accounts are being worked on (in Growth or sold to from Acquisition). I'm not saying Mongo is this horrific company, but it's not what it once was (the growth and opportunity window has passed 2019-2022). Hence why this year alone, tons of sales reps moved on to companies like Rubrik, Redis, AI startups, etc. Good luck!

Timing and territory are very important in acquisition, I’ve seen reps doing +300k and others not achieving their targets and getting PiPed.
