How would you assess your leadership team's effectiveness in supporting and developing their sales staff at Paychex? Based on your experience with the sales leadership, would you recommend a career in sales at Paychex?

Based on my previous leader, I would recommend Paychex. Based on my current leader, I would not.

I think a lot depends on your DSM and their management style here. Micromanagement is not effective and it feels like they're heading back in that direction as a whole. Hopefully I'm wrong about that. A lot of good people here.

Absolutely do not recommend to anyone who’s serious about a career in sales.

It depends on the zone. I’ve worked in two zones in my time here (through a merger) and the level of support changed significantly from one to the next. Generally however, there has always been a consistent effort toward internal trainings that provide actionable tools for success in the field.

As was previously mentioned. It really depends on who's your DSM. I had a DSM that hired me, but was ultimately demoted during my tenure at Paychex. They were great at being an individual contributor. But not so great at leading a team and coaching. Before departure, my DSM that took over was great. But by then it was too little too late. It's a great way to get a foot in the door, but I wouldn't consider this for the long term. I was in SMB, so it's quite possibly different for other divisions. But SMB is highly competitive and leadership support is a necessity in that division and that can be hit and miss.

I was with Paychex in the same role for 3 years. In that time had 3 different direct reports and 4 different zone managers. The manager support is poor at best. I would honestly stay away if you have other opportunities in your pipeline.

Onboarding at Paychex is pretty solid if you are intentional about it all and stay radically open-minded. You need to be the catalyst to your success. Based on my experience with the sales leadership I would recommend a sales career in Paychex if you are in your 20s looking to get into the space. It is a great resume builder and if you succeed it can vault you into another sales role at a different org if you please.

The Leadership team is awful. The support and development is non-existent, the reason being Paychex doesn't hire in Leaders they promote sales reps into leadership. Additionally, the leaders are spread so thin they're incapable of removing obstacles for reps. Based on my experience at Paychex, I would never recommend or wish a sales career here upon my worst enemy.
