Question

The recruiters at Gartner all say they don't negotiate comp and that its a set number, but based off the info I see here, you can negotiate compensation. Can someone provide some clarity to this for the AE sales roles?

Comp is negotiable and moves mostly by negotiating your title. 
Ex. lowest title is AM, then AE, then Sr. AE, then Client Director. 
There's a comp (OTE) band for every title in every state. 
Ex. a Sr. AE in MI might be $235K-$255K OTE but in Mississippi might be $200K-$220K
You can also negotiate a $10K sign-on bonus but very difficult to do.

As someone who spent 6 years leading sales teams and regions at Gartner I can tell you with certainty that you can negotiate compensation. I recommend starting with a clear salary expectation so they don’t lowball you in the beginning.

What you can (and should) negotiate before accepting an offer, is our OTE.
The split here 60% fixed, 40% variable. And then, over quota the accelerators are great!
There are also additional bonuses, that will take you above OTE without reaching your quota (which is very attainable)

Former AE in UK Mid-Size team here. Comp is negotiable. I was told the same thing early on in process, but once the role was secured I negotiated an additional 30% ish on the base.

My advise is to call them, say that “if it’s not negotiable then I’ll leave the process now”. See what happens.

Each position has a set range of comp based on experience. Although you can't exceed the top of the salary bracket you can negotiate within the set range.  Realistically we are probably talking about 5-10k not 20+.

You can definitely negotiate Comp. The only role where you really can’t is if you’re a new hire straight out of college. They won’t typically negotiate with new hire AE’s. But if you have some type of experience you can definitely negotiate.

Absolutely false. At least in the us for field roles.  Presume it’s the same.  At minimum if they won’t come up on total comp they’ll usually do a signing bonus.

You can negotiate to Senior AE for more $$ but have heard they are pushing folks back to AE for exact same role. Would depend on your sales experience - and upper mgmt.

It depends on the role. I know the role I am in now salary was negotiable and all me and my colleagues get paid the same. Some of our salaries are different now based on performance reviews and promotions but we all started at the same salary.

You can definitely negotiate slightly - but they do have structures in place for certain tiered roles and locations.

As someone in a top cost of living city when I started at Gartner I received 215K as an OTE (60/40 split) however, I know thats not the same for most geo areas.
