Better to be an AE or BD within the LE HR business?

No matter where you are at Gartner, it’s better to be an AE. The BD life is an absolute grind as Gartner is a nice to have, not a need to have. IT may be a slight exception, but even then I would prefer to be an AE.

HR is a growing practice. Either way is good just depends on your personal preference. Do you have want to manage existing customers with responsibility of renewing them and adding growth? Or do you want to strictly hunt for new clients? First is AE job, second is BD.

Given that the HR-business is quite immature in Gartner, I'd say BD. The reason for this is that as an AE you are responsible for retaining and growing clients, and I wouldnt bet on the retention-rate on these services. However there's a great greenfield of opportunities, so a BD role should be better

BD's seem to be doing well lately. Across the board it's more important who your leaders are at Gartner. As a BD at least you don't run the risk of getting a terrible book of business. I would verify who your manager and VP will be and then ask around about how they are.

It all depends on what your background is. Gartner does a great job vetting for the role so if you were an AE in the past you have a much better chance of getting an AE role.

It really depends on your evaluation criteria. 
It may be more remunerative a BD role, but quota may be more attainable in the AE role.

You should think about the activities you like to run.

In BD there are big strategic wins and as an AE you delve deeper into tactic relationships.
