It is a very bespoke sale. Making it very challenging to adjust to market changes. When markets need solutions, making everything from scratch is problematic.

Appian has a great product that applies well in the Public Sector and FSI verticals, but has very limited penetration outside of those sectors. Good company, went through some changes with the BDR program. Good pathway to AE but can be a hard sell. Internal development and training are great and can be applied though out your career in sales. Quote are attainable and commission structure was very good compared to other enterprise SDR Roles.

My overall experience was poor. Very tough place to work. Two year plus sales cycle and nearly no one hit there goal. Great product but only AE’s with existing accounts who buy make money.

Leadership keep changing, this year alone we had 3 CROs. Message to the market is confusing and varies every 2 quarters. The product is great but the company has very little capabilities to market it properly, pricing structure is favorable only to very large deals, starting with Appian for a new customer is overly expensive. Leads are non-existant.

Stated goal of the CEO is to be the most expensive platform, as he believes Appian delivers more value in what has become an increasingly commoditized space. If you are looking to be a sales rep, look elsewhere. Maybe 25% hit quota and that's from upgrading existing enterprise customers. 90% of new reps do not close a new logo deal in their first 18 months. Things have changed over the last few years. The market is much more crowded. It’s much more difficult to differentiate from competitors. Strategy is a constantly moving target. What was once a great company and culture has become a huge grind.

As a veteran salesperson, this was not the best experience in terms of overall career growth. Much of the organization is disorganized with little or no strategy in terms of positioning the technology in the market. Further, to be candid, the sales leadership is non-existent, arrogant and without accountability. Not a good model for growth.

Mass layoffs of the sales team in July 2024, including the entire SDR org and mid-market team. They also cut RVPs who were great performers in the name of “flattening the org structure.” There is still a lot of pipeline but morale is low.

Lots of turnover at the upper management level. Lower levels are relatively stable, commercial team has seen the biggest hit of layoffs. Public sector is the spot you want to be in here - specifically federal level.

There is definitely money to made if you hit quota but very few reps hit quota. High turn over on every level. Some industries are a stronger fit than others (for example: public sector, life sciences, financial services). Great company, great people and amazing product. Their GTM strategy in this region isn't amazingly well defined and perhaps too much is controlled by HQ. Lots of issues with legal and contracting too. I would absolutely work here again.

Lots of smart, kind people to work with across the GTM organization. Sales org. was plagued by territorial battles and political favoritisms whereby only a few enjoyed the fruits of their (and others) labor. No strategy for GTM except for government, FSI, and Life Sciences. Any other industry go elsewhere. Pricing strategy - The CEO thinks it's valuable, but customers don't agree. Legal runs the sales team. Avoid unless you want a short-term role. Do not believe the best places to work posts these are from people there less than 30 days.
