As a CSM, this causes challenges because we no longer receive compensation for upsells, expansions, or CSQLs. These are now solely the domain of the sales team, despite management expecting close collaboration between CSMs and Account Managers on growth.
The misalignment in incentives has led to tension and conflicting priorities between Sales and CSMs. We find ourselves dealing with customers who were oversold or are not the best fit, as Sales is under pressure to meet monthly targets. When customers churn or reduce their usage significantly, it's difficult to offset these losses since upsells and expansions do not count towards your quota.
The current incentives do not reflect the value CSMs bring. To have a more cross-collaborative, we need to reconsider these incentives across the board.
