There are rumblings of activist investor and hedge fund TCS Capital pushing Yelp to merge with Angi (Angie's List). What's it like selling for Yelp these days?

Most days it sucks if you're new. You get a training manager and a lot of them can only take you so far as they are learning as well. Fortunately, I was moved to a senior team. My revenue closed went up immediately. It was on this team being around senior reps I learned that big closers get extra territories and new accounts placed in their name. This makes it seem like they are closing all day everyday while the rest of the team sucks. The ceiling for most reps seem to be $30 - $35k a month in revenue if you have a decent territory for the quarter. To make money, I'd say you need to regularly hit $40k and ascend through the pay raises quickly to increase your base. Selling the product gets a bit tough because it is more expensive than competitors and most accounts you call have been called to death or burned by Yelp ads in the past. New accounts are the best hope, and they are showing up more and more slowly. All in all, if you luck up and get a good territory, you will have a decent sales month because you will get new businesses, but if your territory is not great, good luck. Quota alone won't pay much.

I was at Yelp 4 years ago and our main competitors were Google /Google Ads, Angi (formerly Angie's List), and HomeAdvisor. Think about your search usage. When your friends search for a restaurant, where do they go? Generally they grab their phone and do what? Do they already have Yelp downloaded? And if they do, is it the first place they go? Maybe its still Google? Now think about how to pitch that activity to a business owner, who has likely already been getting hit with phone calls by previous reps;  usually twice per day.

It’s tough at the MMAE level.  Leads are lackluster, though fully provided. Strictly new biz and almost 100% outbound.  If you can get in at the enterprise level, or in a client partner position, those are the best positions.  Lots of pressure, lots of middle managers.
