How challenging is it to advance from SDR to AE role at Splunk?

SDR to AE directly is just not gong to happen at Splunk. If you are a seasoned BDR you can potentially make the jump if you built rapport with the RSD’s (AE manager) prior. The traditional route seems to be BDR-> ISR -> Commecial AE and so on.

Three years ago, I went from BDR -> ISR -> RSM in Commercial. SDRs used to progress to BDRs regularly, and then the path I described was laid out. Now at days,  I hear from my colleagues it's nearly impossible to become an AR (RSM). Be mindful of being low-balled on the salary. I was massively underpaid and forced to accept the offer, irrespective of my complaints.

Used to be very common to move from SDR to AE if you were successful in your SDR role. Today though, it's near impossible to move up to AE because they over-hired AE's and are needing to cut or maintain sales headcount rather than increase. If you're wanting to move into an AE role from SDR, Splunk is unfortunately no longer the place to do so.

Agree with the last post.  SDR -> BDR -> AE is the path.  That said, this is a very viable path IMO.  As an RSD at Splunk we looked at the BDR/ISR orgs as the 'farm system' for our teams.  Many successful RSM's come from that org.

I'm not sure if any promotions are going on right now w/ the layoffs from a month ago and few people in Sales hitting their number.  Also, the Cisco deal should finalize soon and who knows what they will do.

It’s hard. Usually you go through the ISR role for at least 6 months, usually a year or more. You have to be at the top of your game pretty consistently, and ideally get in tight with your RSD

Very hard for career progression within Splunk.

Agree with the path laid out below, but not many vacancy's usually come up for BDR/ISR's to progress.
