Your manager at Amazon Web Services (AWS) is super important because he or she will determine whether you fail or succeed. This individual will also play a big part in determining your stack-ranking position. Furthermore, your coworkers and other managers will be included in your yearly review process. So, it is important to make a good report with people inside and outside your organization from day one. Moreover, AWS has designed its organization to have a new crop of employees every four years. For example, as a new hire, you receive a signing bonus in years one and two. Your signing bonus will be exhausted in year three, and all your stocks will be vested in year four. Not even getting promoted will change this because getting promoted comes with additional expectations, but you will receive a marginal increase in pay. For example, new hires will be hired at the level of their pay band, but as an existing employee, you will not be afforded this option or the option to negotiate your pay.
