Question

I’m heading into loop stage for an Ent AE role in North America. I asked someone who just got a job as an AE in my city and she told me she is going to be getting 2 weeks of PTO/vac. This seems incredibly low. I’m at 5.5 weeks after 5 years at my company. How much time off do new AWS joiners get?

Amazon breaks PTO into three buckets: vacation, personal (6 days), and sick (5 days). Vacation days grow with tenure: <12 months (10 days), 1 - 6 years (15 days), 6+ years (20 days). You’ll have 21, 26, or 31 PTO days respectively. PTO is automatically approved and managers never say anything.

That seems right but then as your tenure grows so does your PTO/vacation.  I've been here 6 years and never had an issue with vacation/personal time right now combined can accrue over 4 weeks.  When you stack both together its really a non issue and with the rollover you can easily bank a ton.  I wouldn't let it be the deciding factor on if you take the job or not.

It’s two weeks of vacation and one week of “personal time.”  You can carry over the vacation (up to a cap where you have to use it or stop accruing time) but the personal time is use it or lose it.  I was told it was non negotiable at the time, but I was more focused on negotiating other things at the time.

Former Enterprise rep here. Yes this is AWS standard offer and it's shit. You can try and negotiate more. Back when I joined there was WFH so when my son was born I just stayed home and my boss was cool with it. Now? You better get it in writing. They are being totally inflexible on this right now.
