🏕️ The Era of Staying Put
Offers aren’t crazy high like they were a couple years ago. The volume of open positions is way lower. The pressure on employees to perform is higher than ever.
Yes, organizations are still recruiting, and top talent can always land a role.
But on the whole, it’s as much of an employers market as we’ve seen in a very long time — probably 15 years. It may get worse before it gets better.
So what should you do?
If you’re on the market:
Be as active as possible. Expect 100 “no” responses, and try not to get discouraged. It only takes one yes to get back in the game. Also don’t be quite as picky. If you can land something that you might have considered a B- a couple years ago, consider taking the offer, get employed, and then keep your options open. Worst case maybe the B- org ends up being better than you thought. On the flip side, it might be easier to land a new (better?) role while you’re employed.
If you’re not on the market:
Be very selective with your time and stay focused on ensuring your standing within the organization is solid. The chances of further headcount reductions is real and you need to make sure you’re on the right side of that line. In short, be patient, work on your craft, work to hit some numbers, and let’s ride this out.
If you’re recruiting:
You better have your story straight on why your organization is a better opportunity for someone who’s currently employed. Metrics, stats, addressable market, references, funding, outlook, product innovation. Skepticism is high. And it should be.
