Question

Rep tenure/retention at ADP seems kinda low - or do I have that wrong? Seems like a good place to start your career, but definitely not end it?

Adp hires a ton of new grads, how many new grads do you know, that 100% know what and who they’ll be when they grow up, unfortunately for ADP these new grads  grow up during their time at ADP. Meaning they learn their not really excited about sales, figured the job would be completely different eventually.  Adp’s a great company. Great place to build a career. I left after 7 years and wish I would have stayed.

Definitely depends on where you start.  SBS is a great way to break into sales but is a big grind and therefore seems to have more frequent turnover.  But still, other business units can be affected by turnover as well either due to leadership or being intimidated by a more complex selling process.  I worked in SBS just out of college, had a few other roles then came back to work in Majors before moving to a different industry.  Very different experiences in the two business units but both have been helpful in my career overall as it's great training and foundations.

It’s depends on business unit, but ultimately it’s a great company to scale your career however, if you decide to stay in one position for a long period of time, it’s really going to weigh on you. If you want to move up the ladder it’s a great company to stay with

In the last 1.5 years, my team of 8 in majors has seen 50% turnover including my direct supervisor and our VP of Sales. We didn't have a supervisor for an entire year. I do feel it's a great spot to start a career because the name carries. HCM can also be a monster to get comfortable with for strategic C suite engagement.

Depends on the divison / product you sell. I worked with folks who started out of college, have moved divisions & sold different products, and had different roles - IC + Leadership. These are the ones that have 15-20+ year careers. Some unicorns in some divisions like HRO where tenure is 15-20 years, usually top 1% reps. I can say having ADP on my resume has helped me tremendously in job interviews and landing current & previous roles.

Still a ton of friends there, and there experience is similar to the above, with their experiences also varying team to team/office to office. big sales culture.

Some of the more profitable positions hold people for longer, but the lower level positions such as inside sales SMB or Majors are basically turnover factories for kids trying to figure out what to do after college. The good news is that there’s a relatively low barrier to entry and the training programs are actually pretty superb, so if you can make it through the chaos for a few years you’ll likely find a great job right afterwards at a better company. Not everyone can last that long though or wants to bother sticking to sales, hence the high turnover.

Tons of people are at ADP until retirement. With so many career path options, and assuming you perform at a high level, it’s easy to stay at ADP long term. Each role does have a shelf-life though. Typically 5-6 years before it’s time to move to something else within the org.

I’d agree with this. I was in major accounts (selling to 50-150 employees) for almost 3 years. ADP is a job for many and a career for few. This wasn’t my first sales role, but the one I grew the most in.  I will credit experience in the payroll industry as a great stepping stone, teaches you to grind, and speak to more sophisticated business objectives, and navigate sales cycles. After I left, I learned that a TON of organizations recruit from payroll as it is a complete meatgrinder. But I wouldn’t have traded the experience.
