The current model is broken. Open source software should follow a tried and true path of seamless in place upgrades for on prem paid with a managed service option built on the same core. This company was not very mature from a leadership or forecasting perspective, and while the product is awesome and has a lot of use cases, at the time when I was there they lacked a compelling reason for customers to move off of the open source solution.
