What sales teams or departments should I consider applying for at Wells Fargo and what makes them a good fit?

Depends on what you want to sell?

Credit; fx; tm; Loans; merchant … a lot of different areas which you can sell and get paid

Wells is an extremely conservative bank; especially in the small business and mid market space. They do a good job of training you in credit acumen, but you will close next to no deals at wells; the bank wants everything on a silver platter. They are still under the federal reserve asset cap and so are constantly tightening their lending standards to make room for (meager) growth. Avoid mortgage, they are still not doing home equity lines (the only thing that would make money in this market).

They are a stronger contender in corporate banking / corporate lending, but this is generally a field for seasoned bankers / MBA trainees.

They are pushing managed money (financial advisor, premier banker) because thats a high margin activity, but they are not a prominent name in the wealth industry and most HNW / UHNW clients already have relationships at more capable institutions and private banks.

My advice: wells is a stepping stone, and only worthwhile if you get into a decent branch. avoid mass market branches. find a branch in an affluent area, network with your successful clients, and find your next job through them. There is no growth or advancement at wells; they are still rebuilding the bank from the top down and are probably another 2-3 years away from meaningful progress at the retail level

It would totally depend on you, I worked in mortgage specifically and it was great back then (2014). You’d have to look at if you want a base or commission and if you want to be inside or outside.
