What is the current sales culture like at Couchbase, and have there been any recent shifts in the way the sales team operates?

Fairly new rep here but my experience has been positive. Sales culture is highly collaborative, friendly and energetic. The tools, enablement and team support are all there to help build a sustainable book of business. I can't speak to any shifts because of my short tenure, but most people on the field teams have been here for a while. People that join CB stay at CB it seems.

Sales culture can be different from team to team. My team had quite an old school win at all costs attitude where others would be far more collaborative. The main problem I found though was that Couchbase pushed a 'We are a Couchbase family' vibe, however as there is high churn and managers/reps alike are under a lot of pressure, this leads to a lack of transparency/trust. I recall being held up as an example after my promotion only for 6 months later to find out both the rep I was working with and manager were actively pushing a bad agenda about me to the Regional Director as I was the most junior member of the team and the team was under pressure for 2 poor quarters. In short this isn't a place where you are given the full picture i.e. perform or expect to be fired.

So don't be under any illusions that Couchbase is above other sales jobs where reps with throw each other under a bus for any slight advantage and managers will hang you out to dry if it serves them. It is exactly like that. From a culture perspective if you are ok with this and have thick skin and be cognizant of how people might use you etc., then you will be fine. There are plenty of good people at Couchbase, and the product is very cool.

I would caution on the sales culture and make sure it's a fit. It's a pressure cooker with little support across the sales org or from leadership. Sales cycles are relatively long and there's been a lot of churn throughout the sales org with a heavy focus on new logos at very low price points (land/expand) to keep up the "growth". I've seen the sales team turn over twice during my time and the sales other than a few reps that have collected large accounts.
