Made the leap from SDR to AE, thought I was getting a raise. Turns out, my base is actually lower now because of “higher earning potential”. No one mentioned this before. Is this normal or did I just get played?
Yeah I mean you should have known this before you accepted, they didn't clarify what the new package would be? Also like the other person who commented on this said, this is NOT typical and very rare. Look at all the data we have on the site here comparing SDR comp to AE comp, AEs have higher upside AND higher base. Bummer, but keep grinding, maybe parlay that into something better.
Well damn. Thanks for the validation.
Don’t get too disillusioned by the situation but definitely start planning for your next step. Not sure how much of a salary cut you took, but if you can afford it, stick with the AE role and work hard to close deals. The jump from SDR to AE is a tough one, so that’s one hurdle cleared - well done! You’ll probably be able to secure another AE role in a year or two after some experience under your belt. Is view this as a stepping stone and start planning what you’ll need for your next move.
Played. Not normal at all.
